The cork harvesting process begins in the Montado Cork Oak forests in Portugal, one of the 36 biodiversity hot spots in the world. This bark is removed manually, through a stripping process, and the trees do not have to be cut down, in fact, the cork oak undergoes a self-regeneration process of the bark, giving cork harvesting a uniquely sustainable nature. During this process, for every 1 tonne of cork that is harvested, the forest retains up to 73 tonnes of CO2.
